VESA wants to focus on standardization virtual reality
The Video Electronics Standards Association has created a Special Interest Group to focus on standardization in the augmented and virtual reality markets. According to the organization, devices must be able to work together for further adoption of ar and vr.
The VESA AR/VR SIG will deal with the standardization of connectors, protocols, drivers and application layers. The working group then makes suggestions to adapt existing VESA standards and proposals to third parties to change their standards. The SIG therefore seeks collaboration with other standardization organizations and companies in various sectors, including headset makers, lens makers and so on.
VESA is the organization responsible for, among other things, the displayport standard. According to VESA CEO Bill Lempesis, the market for AR and VR products is growing enormously, but the question is how and when products can work together. “In our opinion, there is no other standardization organization that focuses on interoperability of AR and VR products,” he says.
There are parties that focus on this. For example, Khronos, the organization behind the OpenGL and Vulkan APIs, is investigating an open API that can work with all VR platforms. Razer’s OSVR is also intended to be an open standard with which manufacturers can create software and hardware that work well together.
