VESA to certify OLED screens with peak brightness of 600cd/m²
The standardization organization VESA announces the DisplayHDR True Black 600 label. OLED screens that offer a peak brightness of 600cd/m² are eligible for the label after certification by the VESA.
In addition to the peak brightness of 600cd/m², screens must be able to provide a black display of 0.0005cd/m² at maximum brightness in order to carry the DisplayHDR True Black 600 label. In practice, this means that OLED and microLED screens are eligible for such certification by the VESA. The VESA has already awarded DisplayHDR True Black 400 and 500 labels to displays with maximum brightnesses of 400 and 500cd/m² respectively. New generations of OLED panels offer higher brightnesses.
The True Black variants of the DisplayHDR label are intended to provide consumers with clarity about good black reproduction. For example, with the regular DisplayHDR standard intended for LCDs, the requirement in terms of black values is only 0.16cd/m².
The VESA already lists some products that meet the DisplayHDR True Black 600 standard. For the time being, this only concerns ASUS laptops with OLED screens such as the VivoBook Pro 14X and VivoBook 15 OLED. Asus announced Thursday that it will release more laptops with OLED panels, such as a ProArt StudioBook 16 OLED and a VivoBook Pro 16X.
