VESA adds support for ‘Dual-Mode’ displays to Adaptive-Sync Display

VESA has released version 1.1a of its Adaptive-Sync Display specification for screens with variable refresh rates. This means screen manufacturers can now certify so-called Dual-Mode monitors, which natively support multiple resolutions and refresh rates.

VESA introduces the Adaptive-Sync Display 1.1a standard just before the CES fair in Las Vegas. The biggest change is support for the aforementioned Dual-Mode screens. Manufacturers can obtain such certification for displays that support multiple resolutions and refresh rates. In one example, VESA mentions a monitor that natively supports both 1080p at 280Hz and 4k at 144Hz. The standards organization introduces new testing procedures for this purpose and also provides a logo that indicates such support.

Dual-mode screens are ‘on the rise’ according to VESA. Manufacturers are expected to introduce such monitors during CES. LG already showed an OLED monitor last week that has both 4k and 1080p support, at 240 and 480Hz respectively.
