Developers have stuck version number 1.0 on open source kart game SuperTuxKart after twelve years of development. According to them, the new release is the most important to date, partly due to the addition of play via networks.

The addition of multiplayer functionality took eighteen months and more than twenty thousand lines of code to write. “Across the board, there are more than 2,500 commits and 300 bug fixes between the 1.0 and 0.9.3 releases,” the developers report.

Players can easily create their own server or use various community servers, some of which support online ranking. According to the team behind the kart game, a ping of 100ms and an upload speed of 1.2 megabits per second should be enough for smooth racing.

SuperTuxKart 1.0 includes the game modes ‘normal race’, ‘time trial’, ‘soccer mode’, ‘battle mode’ and the new ‘capture-the-flag’. The development team speaks of the most important step in the game’s 12-year existence, but admits that there is still room for improvement and that the gameplay can still be optimized. SuperTuxKart is a free-to-play racing game for PC based on TuxKart, which ceased development in 2004. As of 2006, the game has had the necessary updates, including a switch to the Antarctica engine in 2014.

The game is available for download for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.
