The American provider Verizon has started offering home internet via 5G in four American cities. This makes the provider, in its own words, the first in the world with 5g subscriptions.

Verizon customers in Los Angeles, Houston, Sacramento and Indianapolis can take out a subscription, where internet comes in via the 5G network, the provider reports. That is possible from Monday. Previously, customers could already register for a subscription. As far as is known, this makes it the first provider to offer a 5G subscription to consumers.

Verizon has chosen to offer home internet first, because the network only has to cover in places where customer routers are located. A mobile network requires much more coverage. A router needs a direct view of a cell tower to function.

Verizon uses 5g in the 28GHz band, which allows for high bandwidths. However, the range is limited and the provider warns that the range could vary from house to house and in an apartment complex from floor to floor. Verizon asks $70 for a subscription and says it offers internet with 300Mbit/s down and an unknown speed up. The maximum download speed is around 940Mbit/s. The router is an Inseego R1000.
