Valve takes action against Borderlands review bombing

Valve has provided the Borderlands franchise with an offtopic reviews label on Steam. New reviews therefore no longer count towards the score. Valve sprang into action after the games faced review bombing from disgruntled fans.

Valve has asterisked the customer reviews chart for Borderlands games stating that “periods of off-topic review activity have been detected.” As a result, recent reviews are excluded from the Review Score. The summary of ‘Recent Reviews’ has also been changed from ‘mixed’ to ‘very positive’.

The adjustment follows so-called review bombing of the Borderlands games. Borderlands 2 has received 2156 negative reviews on Steam since April 1. That was only 412 in the six months before March 31. The other Borderlands titles also received a large amount of negative reviews in a short time.

Fans of the series want to express their dismay at the fact that Borderlands 3 will be available exclusively on the Epic Games Store for half a year. Gearbox will release the game for PC on September 13 in Epic’s store, the release in other stores will not follow until April 2020. Epic tries to gain market share with exclusive releases compared to Steam in particular, to the dismay of many gamers.

Valve introduced its anti-review bombing system in 2017.
