Valve releases beta version of Steam Link app for Raspberry Pi

Valve has released a beta version of Steam Link that runs on the Raspberry Pi 3 and 3 B+, ​​as well as running the Debian-based OS Raspbian Stretch. The app is free, but the source code is not open source. It is not yet known when this version of Steam Link will come out of beta.

Programmer Sam Lantinga shared a download link for the streaming app via a forum post. After installation, the app can be started via the Games menu. In the past month, Valve reported that the Steam Link hardware is no longer available in Europe and that it is nearly sold out in the US. This could mean that Valve has the intention to take the hardware Steam Link out of production. The company has not yet provided any clarity on this.

The beta version of the app for Android has been available since May. The app works more or less like the hardware. Once users have the Steam Link app installed on their set-top box, TV, tablet, smartphone or Raspberry Pi, they can stream from the Steam library on their PC.

Valve also wanted to release Steam Link for iOS, but Apple rejected the app. This is because Steam Link does not meet the requirements and guidelines of the App Store. Valve is still negotiating with Apple about how the app can meet the requirements.
