Valve registers Chaperone brand name
Valve appears to have registered the Chaperone brand name. The description shows that the developer does not want to use the brand name for a game, but for a device that has something to do with virtual reality. Details are unknown.
The database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows that Valve filed an application earlier this month to register the brand name. According to the description, it wants to use them for “hardware and software, sensors and beacons for the detection and measurement of movement of physical objects and the representation of those objects in a virtual world.”
Valve has been working on virtual reality products for some time. It is collaborating with HTC on the Vive, a VR headset that is similar to the Oculus Rift. Perhaps Chaperone is the name of the module that Valve wants to use to track the user’s movements. Light-sensitive diodes are placed on the outside of the Vive, which collect light that is emitted by a separate module so that the position of the player can be determined. It could mean that Valve and HTC consider the camera optional and want to market it as a separate product. Valve itself has not released any details about Chaperone.
