Valve ends Ubuntu support on Steam

Valve has announced that it will stop supporting Ubuntu on its Steam service. This has to do with the fact that Ubuntu will no longer support 32-bit software on 64-bit systems.

Pierre-Loup Griffais, a developer employed by Valve, gives in a message on Twitter that Ubuntu is no longer supported as of version 19.10. Instead, Valve will focus on Steam support for another Linux distribution, but it’s unknown at this point which one that will be.

The fact that Steam is no longer supported on Ubuntu has to do with the fact that the creators of the latter have chosen to drop 32bit support. They announced this last week, indicating that a solution would be sought with Valve to allow Steam to function in the future. So that doesn’t seem to have worked.

For now, Steam will likely continue to work on versions of Ubuntu with a version number below 19.10. However, it is possible that due to the lack of support, newer versions of Steam will no longer work with Ubuntu in the future.
