The Vehicle2Grid energy storage system will be put into use in the Utrecht district of Lombok on Tuesday. With this system, charging stations for cars are connected to solar panels and electric cars can also return energy.

The Utrecht district of Lombok will receive the first Vehicle2Grid charging station in Europe. The pile will be put into use on Tuesday, followed by fifteen more comparable piles for the system. The intention is that electric cars will act as mobile batteries for the storage of solar energy.

The poles are connected to solar panels of buildings in the district. Cars can charge at the poles, but the system also works the other way around: if there is too little electricity, the vehicles can supply energy back to the electricity network.

The idea comes from the Smart Solar Charging consortium. Stedin, the municipality of Utrecht, GE, Vidyn, Last Mile Solutions, Economic Board Utrecht and LomboXnet are participating in this, the latter writes.
