Users take action over lack of support for older OnePlus phones

Users of older OnePlus phones have taken to social media over the lack of support for older phones. The users believe that OnePlus has broken promises about updates it would release.

The initiator of the action, a former moderator of the OnePlus forum, says in a post on Medium that the Chinese smartphone maker has reneged on promises the company has made for the OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X, devices from 2014 and 2015. For example, OnePlus promised updates for the One for two years after the fight with Cyanogen in 2015, but support stopped after a year.

In addition, OnePlus promised regular security updates with new patches for the 2 and X, but for both phones those updates hardly come out and they also contain older patches. In addition, the Android 6.0 update for the OnePlus X was long in coming and the manufacturer seems to no longer release the Android 7.0 update for the OnePlus 2 at all.

The former moderator has set up a so-called Thunderclap campaign, in which all participants post messages on social media about the subject at once. In a thread on the OnePlus forum, he calls on owners of one of the older phones to participate. The manufacturer has not yet responded to the promotion.
