User edits Apple AirTag to fit in his wallet
The Apple AirTag is the solution for the Apple user who constantly loses their keys. But what if you can’t find your wallet anywhere? Andrew Ngai thought of that; he converted the AirTag to fit in his wallet, into a 3d-printed card.
The AirTag can help Apple users find items they have lost. For 35 euros each, the Bluetooth devices can find everything that is connected to the AirTag, such as keys, via the Find My app. Separate key fob cases are available for the latter, but the AirTags, which are 8mm thick, do not fit in most wallets.
That’s why Andrew Ngai decided to take apart his AirTags. He reverse engineered the AirTag and built a 3.8mm thick 3D-printed case around it. He easily removed the CR2032 battery, but the rest of the AirTag is glued to the case. So he had to heat the AirTag to 65 degrees Celsius so he could detach the logic board and place the battery next to the logic board, rather than on top of it. He soldered the necessary connections himself and placed them in a case the size of a credit card.
Much to his own delight, and surprise, Ngai didn’t break the AirTag when he took it apart and resoldered it. “I’m pretty happy with it,” he says in the video. “It now fits in my wallet and my wallet isn’t as thick as it was with the AirTag in it.” And for anyone who now wants to disassemble their AirTag themselves, he adds: “I advise anyone who is not familiar with hands-on electronics work to try this themselves, because some parts of the pcb are very fragile. demolished the power connector and had to re-solder it.”
Ngai isn’t the first to get crafty with his AirTag. Earlier this week, IFixit also disassembled an AirTag to make a hole for key rings, so that you don’t have to buy a separate case if you want to hang the AirTag on your key ring.
