US wants to ban the use of telecom equipment Huawei and ZTE by government
The US government is working on a bill that will make it impossible to use telecom equipment from Huawei and ZTE within government institutions. The planned measure comes after Chinese companies, including Huawei and ZTE, were previously accused of espionage.
The US Parliament is working on a bill with the number HR 4747, and it will be called the Defending US Government Communications Act. The text of the bill is already available online. It has not yet been voted on, so it is still unclear whether the ban on the use of Huawei and ZTE telecom equipment by government organizations will actually be enacted into law.
Last week, Huawei expressed its frustrations with American telecom providers, because they reportedly do not want to cooperate with agreements to sell new smartphones in the United States. Richard Yu, the director of Huawei’s consumer products division, made these statements during a speech at the CES fair.
In the United States, however, government officials have long been concerned about possible espionage by the Chinese government via Chinese telecom companies, including Huawei and ZTE. China would put pressure on telecom companies to cooperate in espionage. This is also referred to in the bill. There are also rumors that the US government has put pressure on carriers not to conclude sales deals with Huawei.
