US President Biden to electrify entire government fleet
New US President Joe Biden promises in a speech that the government’s fleet will be replaced by electric cars. Biden wants to use EVs made in America. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles.
Replacing government cars with zero-emissions was a promise from Biden’s election campaign and in a speech he now says to start with that. It is not yet known when the replacement will start and how long it will take before the entire government fleet consists of electric models.
Biden says the cars will be replaced by zero-emission models made in the United States. That should create millions of jobs in the auto industry. Biden also wants to create incentives for consumers to replace their petrol car with an electric one, for example with discounts. No details are known about that plan yet.
Biden’s commitments could have a major impact on electric car development in the United States. The Verge notes that American brands such as Ford and GM are in the process of switching to electric models and are also offering vans. The government uses many such vehicles. Those brands can therefore expect large orders due to Biden’s plans.
The US fleet of vehicles consisted of nearly 650,000 vehicles, according to the 2019 Federal Fleet Report. That includes 245,000 civilian vehicles, 173,000 military vehicles and 225,000 vehicles used by the U.S. Postal Service. Together, those vehicles covered a distance of 7.2 billion kilometers in 2019.
