US authorities resume investigation into ZTE
ZTE is again under a magnifying glass with the US authorities. According to sources, investigations are underway into suspicions of bribery. The Chinese company is said to have bribed foreign government employees.
The investigation into ZTE has not yet been publicly announced, but sources from NBC News have heard that a new bribery case has been opened by US authorities. ZTE responds that it is cooperating with its legal obligations, which seems to confirm the case against the company; however, ZTE declined to comment substantively.
According to NBC News sources, it is a bribery case in which government employees outside the United States were allegedly bribed. It is not clear which countries are involved. ZTE was previously accused of bribing government employees in African countries.
ZTE some time ago settled with the US authorities in a case that involved violating US trade rules regarding Iran and North Korea. The company had to pay $1.9 billion to settle the case. According to US intelligence services, ZTE, like China’s Huawei, is a threat to national security.
