US Army Cyber Department Disrupted Trickbot Botnet Operation
The US military has recently tried several times to disrupt the operation of the botnet Trickbot. The government hackers would have been successful a number of times. Trickbot is said to be one of the largest botnets in the world.
The generally well-informed The Washington Post reports this, based on four sources that work for the US government. One of the attacks allegedly invaded the botnet and sent an update to infected computers, disrupting communication with the botnet servers. The attack, which took place on September 22, was noticed by a number of security researchers, but the US government has not admitted to being behind it. In addition, another similar attack took place recently.
The US Cyber Command already indicated in August that it was trying to disrupt the operation of botnets. The US government sees this as a threat to national security, and also fears that the integrity of the US elections could be compromised. Trickbot is used for ransomware attacks, among other things.
It does not appear that Trickbot has sustained any permanent damage from US military operations. For example, the administrators would have started rebuilding the network again, and it would be able to carry out ransomware attacks again.
