The Meta Quest 3, the upcoming virtual reality goggles from the Facebook parent company, will get color real-world passthrough. That means users can see the real world without taking the headset off.

Meta chairman Mark Zuckerberg confirmed this while discussing the latest quarterly figures earlier this week. that’s how UploadVR caught on. Zuckerberg calls the functionality “Meta Reality,” which means using two black-and-white cameras to create a three-dimensional image of the environment and a single color camera to fill in the colors in that image. Applications and games can also use this functionality. For example, a board game or a round of golf can be played in AR.

The Meta Quest Pro, the $1,800 VR headset for professionals, already has that functionality, but its consumer counterpart, the Oculus Quest 2, does not. The Meta Quest 3 should change that.

Earlier, Meta announced that the new Quest should come to the market late in 2023 for a price somewhere between $ 300 to $ 500, UploadVR continues. Predecessor Oculus Quest 2 dates from early 2021.

There is no further official information about the Meta Quest 3 yet, but an alleged set of CAD files of the Meta Quest 3 was released in September last year. Analyst Brad Lynch, who released the images, shared a number of possible specifications of the headset. Because the headsets in the Quest series have their own socs on board, they can also be used as standalone, without cables.
