Unreleased Rayman Game for SNES Resurfaces After 24 Years
A Rayman game has never been released for the Super Nintendo, but it was in the making in the distant past. Michel Ancel, creator of the game series with the limbless figure in the lead role, has found the EPROM 24 years later and it appears to still work.
Ancel published his find on Instagram and immediately tried whether the game still works after decades of being in a cupboard. The game started up against his expectations; according to the developer, only four people had seen the Rayman game for the SNES so far. The game would even run at 60fps on the antique console. Last week, Ancel posted another image to Instagram, writing that work on the SNES version of Rayman had been lost.
“We need to make a Switch version of this,” Ancel jokes on Instagram, referring to the new Nintendo Switch console that was unveiled last week. Possibly the comment is a hint to a new Rayman game on the way. Raymand Legends should have been one of the Wii U’s launch games, but it was delayed due to delays after the console had been on the market for a while.
Rayman was first released in 1995 for the Atari Jaguar and later versions for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and MS-DOS followed. The figure in the games has hands and feet, but no arms and legs. This is because the platforms the game appeared on were not powerful enough to render a fully animated character. This was possible by omitting the limbs.
