Owners of Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 consoles can download a 29GB file, which gives access to The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience on Thursday. According to the description, it is a cinematic and real-time tech demo.

The title has appeared in the download stores of Microsoft and Sony. The Matrix experience is published by Epic Games, creator of the Unreal Engine. There doesn’t seem to be a PC version; the download is only available for the PlayStation 5 and for the Xbox Series X and S. Users can already download the file, but the tech demo can be viewed from Thursday. According to the description, this coincides with the presentation of The Game Awards on December 9.

The Matrix Awakens is a “groundbreaking cinematic and real-time tech demo” that gives a “glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment,” according to the caption on download stores. The tech demo was created by people who also worked on the original Matrix film, including director Lana Wachowski. Furthermore, Epic Games “and partners” are mentioned as involved parties.

Last week a reference to the Unreal Engine 5 experience appeared in the back-end of the PlayStation Store. The arrival of The Matrix Awakens has since been confirmed and a short teaser has also been posted on YouTube and the Unreal Engine website. It features a digital version of main character Keanu Reeves. It is obvious that this concerns Unreal Engine 5 images.

New trailer for The Matrix Resurrections

The tech demo of The Matrix Awakens will be released a few weeks before the release of The Matrix Resurrections. Warner Bros. showed the first trailer of that film in September and put the second trailer online on Monday. The film will be released in theaters on December 22 and a month later on HBO Max streaming service.
