Univé introduces consumer insurance for, among other things, ransomware
Insurer Univé has introduced insurance for consumers under the name Zorgeloos Online. Customers can claim this if their computer has been affected by ransomware, for example. Ransom is not insured.
According to Univé, only the damage ‘actually suffered as a result of a cyber incident’ is insured. For example, if a device becomes unusable due to ransomware, the insurer will reimburse the costs for replacement up to a maximum of five thousand euros. The company does not reimburse ransom payments to get files back. There is also a fee for ‘calling in an expert to retrieve or restore data’.
The condition is that customers who take out the insurance use the Sense router from F-Secure, which the Finnish security company announced at the end of 2015. This is supplied by Univé together with the accompanying app at no additional cost in the form of a loan construction. The router monitors the network traffic of connected devices using machine learning software and threat definitions that reside on an F-Secure server.
By ‘cyber incident’ Univé means any unauthorized access by a third party to the home network, connected devices and digital data. According to the insurer, this can happen through malware or phishing, for example. Together with Axa, VKG has already come up with a similar insurance policy for private individuals. The Univé variant costs twelve euros per month.
