Uncharted ‘works’ for the first time on PlayStation 3 emulator
The developers of RPCS3, an open source PS3 emulator for Windows and Linux, have managed to play the game Uncharted. There are still a number of bugs and errors that prevent this title from working flawlessly, but the game can now be started.
In addition to Uncharted, the developers have also successfully started God of War III, which now also made it possible to actually get into the game. However, there are still plenty of obstacles to overcome before God of War III is really playable. For example, the frame rate was increased to a maximum of 3 fps, but that is still barely playable.
In addition to God of War III and Uncharted, the developers also managed to start the game LittleBigPlanet II and III, where they also managed to start a game. However, this is also not optimal yet, since the start-up only worked via already existing stored data. The team behind RPCS3 has made similar strides in other games, such as Gran Turismo.
Ultimately, the intention is that titles such as The Last of Us, Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3 will also be playable via RPCS3. The former game does not start yet, but it already goes beyond the first loading screen. Killzone 3 no longer hangs on a black screen; introductory screens are already appearing. With Uncharted 3, the menu was already accessible, although it turned out not to be possible to explore the world in the game yet.
In October, it was announced that RPCS3 has added support to render games in resolutions up to 10k. If the games have the assets for this, they look much sharper in the emulator than in the original versions for the PlayStation 3. In July, the developers managed to run Red Dead Redemption at a frame rate of 3 to 15 fps.
