UN: human rights must be protected on the internet
Human rights must also be protected online. That is stated in a new UN resolution that was adopted on Thursday by the Human Rights Council. It is the first time that a UN resolution on internet rights has been passed.
The United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution recognizing the importance of protecting freedom of expression and other human rights on the internet. According to the resolution, these rights must be protected by all member states. It also emphasizes the need to facilitate access to an Internet connection.
China and Cuba finally gave in and signed the resolution. They recognized ‘the importance of a global and open internet as a driving force for progress and development’. The Chinese delegate did make a comment. According to the Chinese envoy, internet users, and young people in particular, must be protected from ‘harmful websites’.
Marietje Schaake, MEP for D66, is pleased with the new resolution. “The Internet and technology are playing an increasing role in the lives of people worldwide. Human rights must be respected and protected online in the same way as offline,” said Schaake. According to the MEP, there are caveats: “We must be careful that this statement does not become lip service, because some countries that initiated the resolution do not adhere to the principles agreed upon today.”
