FIFA Ultimate Team
In the Ultimate Team game mode, players build their own team and EA sells lootboxes that give players the chance to acquire good athletes. In recent years, this has become an increasingly important source of income for EA. In the past three years, Ultimate Team accounted for at least 27 percent of annual revenue. EA’s earnings model is being scrutinized by various authorities worldwide.
At the end of last year, code was also found in FIFA that would indicate the possibility to disable Ultimate Team regionally if necessary due to legislation. Until now, EA has not used that possibility in practice.
