Ukraine reports cyber attack on Ministry of Defense website and two banks

According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, cyber attacks took place on Tuesday against the ministry’s website and the systems of two banks. As a result, the ministry’s website is offline and a bank reports problems with payments.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that a cyber attack had taken place. The government told Reuters that it is not yet clear who is behind the attack. The impact of the attack on the systems of the Ministry of Defense was also not disclosed.

In addition to the Ministry of Defense, two banks were also affected. It concerns the Oshadbank and the Privatbank. The Oshadbank has confirmed to Reuters that there are problems with internet banking and payments due to the attack. Privatbank has not yet responded.

It is not the first time that Ukraine has announced that it has been hit by a cyber attack. Ukraine suspects Russia of previous attacks. Tensions between Ukraine and neighboring Russia have risen in recent months. Russian troop movements on the border with Ukraine are causing unrest.
