‘Ubuntu version Meizu MX4 will be released in Europe later this month’
The Chinese hardware manufacturer Meizu is said to release the Ubuntu version of the Meizu MX4 in Europe in mid-June. This makes the converted Android phone the second smartphone with Ubuntu to be released in Europe.
Omgubuntu writes that based on sources. The smartphone with a 2GHz octacore MediaTek MT6595-soc clocked at 2GHz was launched in China in May. The European price is set at 299 euros. Furthermore, the phone is equipped with a 5.4 “IPS screen with a resolution of 1920 by 1152 pixels and the device has 2GB RAM with 16GB flash storage. The main camera has 20.7 megapixels and the front camera has 2MP.
The phone will be sold in a limited edition on an invitation-only basis. Initially, you can only get an invite by going to the Meizu website and searching for an invite in an ‘interactive origami wall’. There would be several hundred invitations available per day. The reason for this cumbersome way of selling would be, in addition to creating a buzz, that there is a low stock and so only people who know what they are buying buy the device.
Also, Meizu is said to make an image of Ubuntu Phone OS available in the near future, making it possible to flash an Android Meizu MX4 with Flyme OS to an Ubuntu Phone version.
In addition to Meizu, BQ will also launch an Ubuntu smartphone this month. The E5 comes next to the previously released E4.5 and has a 5 “screen with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. The processor is a MediaTek MT6582 quadcore at a maximum of 1.3GHz. The device will cost 199 euros.
