Ubuntu MATE for GPD Win Max Mini Laptop appears

Ubuntu MATE has appeared for the Win Max mini laptop from the Chinese manufacturer GPD. Users who prefer to run the Linux distribution over Windows 10 on the small handheld can download the image.

The Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 LTS image downloadable for GPD Win Max was developed by Martin Wimpress. Among other things, he made changes to the distro so that the touchscreen, trackpad, controller, and media keys work properly.

It is not the first time that versions of Ubuntu MATE appear for GPD’s mini laptops. Liliputing lists that the OS was also made suitable for the Pocket, Pocket 2 and Win 2, among others. Ubuntu MATE is a derivative of Ubuntu that uses the MATE desktop environment. MATE is a continuation of Gnome 2, which was Ubuntu’s default desktop environment, up to version 10.10.

GPD is a Chinese handheld manufacturer. Initially they mostly ran Android, but in 2016 the first GDP Win, a mini laptop with Windows, appeared. Earlier this year, the company released the Wind Max, which combines a small form factor with 8 “display with relatively powerful hardware such as a Core i5-1035G7.
