Ubisoft starts transferring Stadia games to its own launcher for free

Ubisoft has started adding games that players purchased on Stadia to their Ubisoft accounts as the Stadia service closes on January 18. It appears that the transfer will happen automatically for players who have linked their Ubisoft account to Stadia.

Users report this on Reddit, among others and Twitter. The process would be step by step; users report that some of their games have been released and some have not yet. The trial apparently began on Friday and at the time of writing appears to be incomplete. Players can see the games appear in Ubisoft’s own PC launcher Ubisoft Connect.

Google announced at the end of September that it was pulling the plug on game streaming service Stadia. The money that players have invested in the platform’s hardware and games will be returned to them by the internet giant. Yet Ubisoft gives the games as a gift on its own platform. However, according to the users in the linked Reddit post, saves cannot be migrated for every game.

It varies per publisher and developer how the shutdown of Stadia is handled. Hitman developer IO Interactive, for example, offers to transfer the progression to a platform of your choice, but does not give the games away for free. Other studios say they have no plans at all.
