Ubisoft halts further development of VR multiplayer game Space Junkies
Ubisoft has stopped developing arcade VR shooter Space Junkies. The non-VR version, of which a beta appeared, will not be released. The vr game doesn’t seem to be getting any new content either. The servers will remain online.
Ubisoft announced in a blog post that the non-VR version of Space Junkies is not being developed further. That version was available through an open beta until the end of August, but will not be officially released.
Ubisoft writes that “the end of the game’s development” has arrived, but that the servers for the VR version will remain online. Space Junkies is available on Steam, the Oculus Store and the PlayStation Store. The game is still sold there for twenty euros. The game cost $40 at release.
The VR version of Space Junkies was officially released in March this year, after a beta appeared in 2017. In the game, players compete in teams of two or battle each other in a free-for-all mode. Upon release, Ubisoft announced that updates would bring more modes, maps, and weapons. In June, a 3vs3 mode and bots were added.
Presumably, Ubisoft intended to increase the popularity of the game with the non-VR version of Space Junkies. It is unknown why development was discontinued. The VR game doesn’t seem to have many active players either, although no official figures are known. According to a website that tracks how many players are active in VR games on the platform via a Steam API, Space Junkies has been played by up to six players simultaneously in the past 24 hours.
