Ubisoft gets more revenue from PC games than from PlayStation 4 games
Ubisoft generated more revenue from PC games in the past quarter than from PlayStation 4 games or Xbox One games. According to the publisher, this is partly due to good sales of Anno 1800, a game that is only available for PC.
In the past three months, 34 percent of sales came from PC game sales, Ubisoft reports in its quarterly figures. PlayStation 4 games come in second at 31 percent, followed by Xbox One games at 18 percent. That Ubisoft earned more from PC games is striking, because consoles have been the largest platform in terms of revenue for years. The PlayStation 4, which has sold more than 90 million units, is traditionally at the top. That was also the case last year, when PS4 games accounted for 38 percent of sales. At the time, PC games accounted for 24 percent of revenue.
The revenue per platform depends on releases on those platforms. For example, Anno 1800 was released for the PC in the past quarter. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot says in a conversation with investors that the game has sold well, but that other games are also doing well on PC. Ubisoft does not mention sales figures for specific games.
Strategy game Anno 1800 was released in April via the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft’s own Uplay store. The relationship between the sales in its own store and in that of Epic is unknown, although Guillemot does hint that sales on Uplay are improving. He says that Anno 1800 is doing well at Epic, but that there is especially “strong momentum” on Uplay. Guillemot says he is satisfied with the results achieved through the Epic Games Store.
In the quarterly results, Ubisoft also mentions two expansions for Anno 1800 that are on the way, titled Botanica and Sunken Treasures. These DLCs will be released between July and September. There will also be a third expansion, The Passage, but when is not yet known.
