Twitter will show tweets to non-followers

Twitter will show users tweets from accounts they don’t follow. This is evident from an updated support page of the microblogging service. Until now, Twitter only showed tweets from people a user follows, with the exception of promoted tweets.

These are normal tweets that Twitter thinks are of interest to the user, according to the updated support page. This includes taking into account how popular a tweet is in a user’s circle of friends. “Our goal is to make your timeline even more relevant and interesting,” reports the support page, which was noted by Quartz.

This does not concern retweets or promoted tweets. The latter is where a company deposits money to show a tweet to a user who doesn’t follow the company, and that’s one of the main ways Twitter makes money. It is the first time that normal tweets without payment and without retweets are also shown to non-followers.
