Twitter has indicated that it wants to make its recently introduced audio tweets accessible to the deaf as well. For that, subtitles must be added to the tweets. Twitter promises to do more with the accessibility of its social networking site in the future.

Twitter’s promises come after the company received a lot of criticism over the audio tweets announced this week. The new feature is currently being tested with iOS users and offers the ability to record a message in up to 140 seconds. Incidentally, this only works for original tweets and not for replies or retweets.

According to Twitter, this should give the social networking site a more human touch, but there was criticism that the audio tweets are not accessible to the deaf or hard of hearing. Twitter promised on this that it will make the feature more accessible to them; consideration is being given to manual or automatic conversion of spoken messages to text. Changes have already been made for the visually impaired or blind to make it easier for them to listen to audio tweets.

The company also promises that it will do more for people with disabilities in the future, giving accessibility features a more prominent place within Twitter. The adaptation for the deaf and hard of hearing should be available in the next iOS release. However, it is not yet clear when it will be released.
