‘Twitter may introduce non-chronological feeds next week’
Twitter may introduce feeds in the coming week that show tweets in non-chronological order. The focus would then be on popular and interesting tweets selected by an algorithm.
The news comes from BuzzFeed sources. The decision would make it easier for users to see the most interesting tweets. With the current reverse chronological timeline, users still have to do that themselves. However, Twitter has already introduced the ‘While you were away’ functionality in the past. That’s a small, separate timeline that shows the most interesting tweets from a timeline since the last time a user visited Twitter.
At this point, it’s not entirely clear whether the microblogging site’s new timeline style will become a mandatory tweak for everyone or not. The new feeds may start as an opt-in function and a mandatory switch will follow later. According to Buzzfeed, small-scale tests with the new feeds have gone well. These tests have certainly been running since December.
Twitter Interim CEO Jack Dorsey has previously indicated that the company is looking at ways to make the service “easier and more accessible to more people.” In addition to the possible changes to feeds, there is a very good chance that the limit of 140 characters per tweet will also be lifted. It is not known what the new limit will be.
