Twitter lets users accept private messages from anyone

Twitter will once again make it possible for users to receive private messages for all accounts, including from people they don’t follow. That probably makes the lives of webcare employees of companies a lot easier.

More than a year ago, Twitter made it possible to receive private messages from all accounts, including accounts that a particular user does not follow. That option was abolished after a month for unclear reasons, but it will soon be back, reports The New York Times.

According to Twitter, users will be given the option to allow users who do not follow them to send private messages. This indicates that the option is opt-in. Currently, private messages can only be exchanged by users who follow each other. However, the setting is not yet available.

The functionality is probably mainly intended for webcare accounts of companies. In order to exchange data that not everyone is allowed to see, such as address details, users must ask webcare accounts if they can be ‘tracked back’. In the future, that would be more accessible. It is unclear what measures Twitter is taking to combat spam bots.
