Twitter is working on a feature to verify users again

Twitter is working on a feature that will allow users to request verified status. With that status, the users get a blue checkmark next to their portrait, letting other Twitter users know that the person is who he or she claims to be.

Tweeter Jane Manchun Wong writes about the function, which should go into Twitter’s settings menu. Under Personal Information in the account settings, the heading Request Verification will appear. It seems that users will be able to request verification of their account again in the future. According to The Verge, Twitter has confirmed Wong’s tweet.

Requesting such a verified status was previously possible with Twitter. However, the medium paused to verify this in 2017, when a user who posted racist messages about a woman who died in the Charlottesville protests was given such a check. Twitter wanted to verify a user’s identity with this verification, but came to the conclusion at the end of 2017 that this could be misinterpreted. Users might think that a verified account has been “approved” by the platform and that the account’s messages are important, according to Twitter.

Since then, Twitter has only provided limited accounts with a blue tick. For example, health organizations were given the tick this year, to the reliability of the accounts to emphasize. It is not yet known when users can request verification themselves.
