Twitter introduces web notifications for direct messages

Twitter will now use the notification functions in desktop browsers such as Firefox and Chrome to notify its users when they have received a direct message. Users must indicate an opt-in for this.

Twitter announces the news via Twitter. Although the company reports that anyone can opt-in immediately, the link they provide leads to the messages page, but there is not always the option to enable the notifications. The function will probably be rolled out somewhat gradually and sooner or later all users will be able to use the notifications.

Earlier this month, the company also announced that it was lifting the 140-character limit on DMs. With this, the company wants to encourage its users to also use the social medium for private communication, which is probably also the motivation behind this addition.
