Twitpic doesn’t close doors anyway

Contrary to expectations, Twitpic will not close its doors next week. The company has been acquired and will keep its doors open, the company has announced. It is unknown if an ongoing conflict with Twitter has been resolved.

Earlier this month, Twitpic announced that the company would close its doors on September 25, following a conflict with Twitter over Twitpic’s application for the “Twitpic” brand name. Twitter would have demanded that that trademark application be withdrawn; otherwise Twitpic would lose its access to the Twitter api.

As it turns out, the company will not close its doors after all. “We have been acquired and Twitpic will continue to exist!” tweeted the company, which promises to disclose more details at a later date. It is not yet known by which company Twitpic was acquired.

Twitpic, along with services like Mobypicture and Yfrog, has long been widely used by twitterers to share photos and videos. However, three years ago, Twitter introduced its own photo service, which is automatically used in the Twitter mobile apps and on the Twitter site. The popularity of the photo sites quickly declined.
