According to analyst firm Sensor Tower, in 2018, twice as many U.S. app publishers achieved $1 million in revenue on the App Store than on the Play Store. That was also the case last year, according to the agency.

According to the analysts, in 2018 there were a total of 88 publishers that reached the million dollars on the Play Store, but with the App Store there were 164. In 2017 they were 71 and 143 respectively. The Play Store is growing faster than the App Store in this area: Google’s app store gained 24 percent more publishers who brought in a million dollars and Apple 15 percent. Sensor Tower notes that these data also match the total turnover figures; the App Store also brings in about twice as much money there as the Play Store.

The largest share of the new ‘millionaires’ on the App Store have earned that money with games: 33 percent. This is followed by health and fitness app developers at 12 percent. The Play Store is partly different: 65 percent earned it with games and only 5 percent with health and fitness.

The money comes from paid apps, in-app purchases and subscriptions. “Based on these numbers, it appears that Apple will continue to have the most lucrative platform for mobile developers in 2019,” the agency said.
