Solar Team Twente has to deal with a setback, a month before the start of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia. The team’s car, the RED Shift, should already be in Darwin, but will probably not arrive until the end of this week.

If the solar car does indeed arrive on Friday 8 September, as is currently expected, that will be a disappointment for the students. They then have a week less to tinker with the car and prepare it for the race, which starts on October 8.

“First, the box was stuck at the airport in Kuala Lumpur for three days. Now it got stuck in Sydney,” says team leader Olivier Berghuis. The team of nineteen students from the University of Twente and Saxion is now gearing up to get started as soon as possible after the arrival of the RED Shift and to compensate for the lost time with overtime.

Solar Team Twente presented the RED Shift at the end of June. The solar car contains, among other things, a modified system for the distribution of energy over the various solar panels, called Sabine. In the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, the Challenger class team will compete against dozens of international competitors in the 3000km race across Australia.
