Turkey has unveiled two prototype electric cars. A consortium of five companies will in any case bring an SUV and sedan on the market in 2022. The cars would have a range of 500 kilometers on a single battery charge.

Turkish President Erdogan himself was one of the presenters at the unveiling. The car is also made in Turkey, which Erdogan labeled a “sixty-year-old dream come true,” writes The Washington Post. The president also made a short test drive in the SUV.

Now only an SUV and sedan have been unveiled, but more models are yet to come. In the long run, according to a leading member of the consortium, there should be fifteen different options. According to Turkish media, the design comes from the Italian design agency Pininfarina, which has also made designs for car brand Karma.

TOGG, a consortium of five Turkish companies, would partly owe the introduction of the cars to tax benefits and state aid, NOS writes. The factory where the cars will be made should open its doors in 2021 and have a workforce of 4300 people. Turkey should also have a nationwide charging network by 2022.
