Turing wants to release HubblePhone with folding screen and 15x optical zoom in 2020
Turing Robotic Industries says it is working on a smartphone that will have a folding screen and a camera with 15x optical zoom. The company, which has made a relaunch, previously released about a thousand copies of its Turing Phone, after repeated delays.
According to TRI’s announcement, the camera has a sixty-megapixel sensor, but the company does not report how big it is. The 15x optical zoom lens, with an aperture of f/2.8 at wide angle and f/5.6 at maximum zoom, is said to be housed in a hinge that connects the two screens. The construction must make it possible to move the screens, flexible OLED panels, independently of each other.
TRI puts all kinds of specifications on its website, but mentions components that do not yet exist. For example, according to the developers, the phone has two Snapdragon 855-socs with Kryo 835 cores at 2.96GHz and a 5G modem. Qualcomm has not officially announced that soc yet. The device would have 256GB storage and 8GB lpddr4x memory, both in the upper deck and in the main deck.
The upper deck would run on Turing Keplerian OS, based on FreeBSD12. It would also have Android 9.0 on it. The main deck has the same operating systems, but also a console mode with Sailfish 3. Furthermore, the manufacturer claims that the HubblePhone will be equipped with an augmented reality application for sending messages with 3D animations that are projected onto the environment of the receiver.
According to the manufacturer, the HubblePhone will be on the market in 2020 for $ 2749. The device should be available in Europe from August that year.
Whether TRI can live up to its claims and really release the concept device shown in 2020 remains to be seen. The company has a questionable track record. TRI’s first smartphone, the Turing Phone, was supposed to be released in 2015, but was repeatedly delayed and never went into mass production. About a thousand copies were supposed to have been delivered in 2016, but only 700 of them were paid for, because some did not receive their device or received a defective one. Support for the device has been discontinued.
In early 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy in Finland as it failed to start production of the phone. However, TRI made a new start in America and promised to continue developing smartphones.
