Turbine shuts down servers of Asheron’s Call mmorpgs
Turbine has announced that the servers of the mmorpg games Asheron’s Call and Asheron’s Call 2 will be shut down on January 31. This brings an end to the seventeen and fourteen year old games respectively.
The developer has announced the shutdown of the servers on Facebook. Asheron’s Call was released for PC in 1999. The game is developed by Turbine and published by Microsoft. That game’s servers have been constantly online ever since. In 2002 the successor was released; Asheron’s Call 2: Fallen Kings. The servers of these are closed after three years. In 2010, Turbine was sold by Warner Bros. and two years later the studio re-released Asheron’s Call 2.
Asheron’s Call received monthly updates with new events until 2014. After that, Turbine decided to continue to maintain the game with bug fixes, but no more new features were added. At the same time, the developer made the game free to play.
Turbine has disabled the registration of new accounts. Existing players can continue to play the game for free until the servers are closed. The rights to Asheron’s Call remain with Warner Bros, but there is no news of any new developments surrounding the franchise.
