TU Eindhoven student team demonstrates self-driving racing car
University Racing Eindhoven demonstrates the first meters of the self-driving racing car that the team has made. The intention is that the car can participate in Formula Student races in the future.
A short video on YouTube shows the self-driving racing car of University Racing Eindhoven. Dion Engels explains to NU.nl that the system is not yet ‘fully robust’ and that pawns are sometimes still hit, but that would be a matter of testing and fine-tuning. University Racing Eindhoven started developing the system to allow the race car to drive independently in September 2017.
The car itself is electric and has been used before by the students in the Formula Student competition. To make the race car run without a driver, the team uses lidar and cameras that scan pawns. The drive is mechanical; small motors on the pedals and steering wheel make the car move.
