TU Eindhoven football robots win Portugal Open
The soccer robot team of TU Eindhoven has won the Portugal Open for the third time in a row. The autonomous soccer robots won 6-1 against the Portuguese Cambada on Sunday. Due to technical problems, the TU/e team lost an earlier round to Cambada.
The TU/e reports this on its website. The Eindhoven robots lost 2-1 in the preliminary rounds to Cambada. This was because the robots had problems with the high sunlight and because there were compass problems with the goalkeeper, which caused the software to crash.
However, the final went well. It was 4-0 before the break. A lot of ball possession through good passing, together with the solved technical problems, resulted in the win. The only Portuguese goal that the recovered keeper failed to stop came in the last minute.
The Portugal Open is the only RoboCup tournament in Europe where football robots from the Middle Size League will play this year. TU/e plays in this league. The tournament is a preparation for the teams for the World Cup. This year’s world championship will take place in Hefei in China from July 17 to 23. In Hefei, the Eindhoven team will defend the world title they won in Brazil last year.
