Trump: Joint Cyber Security Unit with Russia Cannot Come
US President Trump and Russian President Putin discussed plans at the G20 to create an ‘impenetrable’ Cyber Security unit that should, among other things, prevent election hacking. The unity cannot come, Trump said later.
That the presidents had discussed working together on internet security during the G20 summit, was already clear from Kremlin publications on Saturday. “The US president and I have agreed to set up a working group and work together to monitor the security of cyberspace,” Putin said, adding that the intention was to prevent interference from the internal politics of both countries. He also stated that he had no doubts that the plans would be carried out.
Trump declared discussed with Putin on Sunday the formation of an ‘impenetrable’ Cyber Security unit ‘against election hacking and many other negative things’. Thirteen hours later reported Trump added that although the plans had been discussed, they could not be implemented.
The US has an agreement with China that the countries will not hack each other back and forth. That was agreed in 2015 under the then US President Obama. The talks followed claims by US authorities that China’s state hackers were behind massive attacks on businesses and government agencies.
