Trick makes Google’s Daydream usable without a compatible phone and headset
A Reddit user posted a method online to use Google’s VR platform Daydream without a compatible phone, headset or controller. However, VR glasses or cardboard and a second Android phone are required.
In any case, the trick works on a Nexus 6P from last year, although the interface on it is not as smooth as on the Google Pixel phones. Pressing the build number seven times in the app’s settings brings up developer options. For example, users can use an emulator instead of a controller. That emulator simulates the Daydream controller buttons on the screen of an Android phone running 4.4 or higher and a gyroscope.
In addition, installation of the Daydream keyboard is required if users want to enter text in Daydream. Google’s VR platform requires Android Nougat, but whether phones other than the Nexus 6P can do this is unknown.
The Daydream app simply shows the image on the display and does not detect if a compatible headset is being used. As a result, the app also works with a Cardboard variant or other headset. Google has now also released the VR version of YouTube and Street View can also be installed in Daydream, just like a number of other apps.
Google is releasing the Daydream View headset and accompanying controller this week. These are officially only compatible with the Pixel and Pixel XL, later devices from other manufacturers that also work with Daydream should appear.
Update, 12:32: The method appears to be based on an explanation from Google for developers. However, the user on Reddit has added links that allow anyone to install the apps and services used.
