Trend Micro Acquires TippingPoint from HP
Anti-virus software maker Trend Micro has acquired TippingPoint, a division of HP that specializes in protecting networks. Trend Micro has paid $300 million for the acquisition. The companies have been working together since last year.
TippingPoint makes prevention systems to keep unwanted visitors out of networks. It also awards rewards to security experts for finding critical security vulnerabilities as part of the Zero Day Initiative, including through the well-known Pwn2own competition.
With the acquisition, Trend Micro will bring TippingPoint’s expertise, experience, customer database and intellectual property in-house. The antivirus company says it will establish a new Network Defense branch for businesses after the acquisition is completed. This will serve more than 3,500 business customers.
In late 2014, Trend Micro announced a strategic OEM partnership with HP. HP uses components of the intrusion prevention systems in its network division. The acquisition is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
