TP-Vision introduces Philips OLED TV with built-in soundbar and HDR10+
TP-Vision presented the Philips OLED+ 903 at the IFA fair in Berlin. This OLED TV is equipped with an integrated soundbar and supports the HDR standard HDR10+ developed by Samsung. The manufacturer also shows the already available Philips OLED 803.
The Philips OLED+ 903 comes in a 55″ and a 65″ variant and is equipped with an integrated soundbar, for which TP-Vision has collaborated with Bowers & Wilkins. This 2.1 sound system integrates speakers from this audio company, including a bass speaker and two forward-facing tweeters. In addition to DTS-HD, Dolby Atmos is also supported. The total power of the soundbar is 50W.
According to TP-Vision, the television offers 10 percent more light output compared to the models that came out in 2017; this would allow the TV to achieve a brightness of up to 1000cd/m². According to the manufacturer, a new OLED panel from 2018 is used in the OLED+ 903; as a result, this higher maximum brightness can be achieved. In addition to hdr10+, hdr10 and hlg are also supported, but that does not apply to Dolby Vision, the counterpart of hdr10+.
The images are controlled by the second generation of the P5 image processor. This includes what TP-Vision calls a ‘contrast-enhancing technology’. A special algorithm is used to make images in standard dynamic range look like HDR images. The manufacturer reports that the system can display details that would normally be lost in sdr.
Like previous Philips TVs, the OLED+ 903 runs on Android TV, of which Android N is available at release. According to the manufacturer, an upgrade to Android O will be released ‘in the near future’; that version of the operating system also allows users to take advantage of the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice assistants built into the TV. The television comes out in October; the 55″ model is in the Pricewatch for 2499 euros and the larger version costs 3499 euros.
TP-Vision also comes with an OLED TV that is largely the same as the Philips OLED+ 903 in terms of specifications. The Philips OLED 803 lacks the built-in soundbar, but according to the manufacturer produces better sound than the 55POS9002 OLED TV from 2017 The OLED 803 also features the second generation of the P5 and supports the same HDR formats. This television will also initially be released with Android N and contains the two voice assistants from Google and Amazon, which will only be available when Android O comes out.
Just like the more expensive OLED+ 903, the Philips OLED 803 achieves a maximum brightness of 1000cd/m². According to a spokesperson, it is the same OLED panel that is also in the OLED+ 903, even though TP-Vision reports with the OLED 803 that the maximum brightness value of the OLED 803 is achieved by an anti-reflective coating.
Both new OLED TVs are characterized by a minimalist design, with thin screen edges and two narrow, horizontal legs that are mounted perpendicular to the screen and can be removed if necessary. The TVs are equipped with a three-sided Ambilight system and come with two different remote controls. Below that is a small square, bar-shaped smart remote with a microphone dedicated to using Google Assistant. The second remote is a standard remote control that has infrared and has a keyboard on the back.
The OLED 803 comes in a 55″ and a 65″ model. Both are already available and are listed in the Pricewatch for 2199 and 3199 euros respectively.
