TP Vision introduces mini LED TVs with brightness of 1000cd/m²
TP Vision has not only announced new Philips OLED TVs for 2023, but also new LCD TVs. Among them are two models that are equipped with a mini LED backlight and that achieve a peak brightness of 1000cd/m². These models get Saphi as the operating system.
It’s about the PML9308 and the PML9008, both of which have a mini LED backlight. High-end televisions with such a backlight usually achieve higher brightness levels than OLED TVs, but the stated 1000cd/m² is a lot lower than the brightness achieved by the also announced OLED+908. That model must achieve a brightness of 2100cd/m² through the integration of a micro-lens array, even though that will be considerably lower in practice and with the regular image modes. It is unknown how many individually dimmable zones the two new miniLED models have.
TP Vision gives these two Philips TVs the marketing name The Xtra and says it wants to make performance more accessible with this series of miniLEDs. The 9308 comes in 55 and 65 inches, while the 9008 comes in 55, 65, and 75 inches. Both models feature the seventh generation of the P5 image processor and MediaTek’s Pentonic 1000 chip and support Dolby Vision at 4k resolution and 120Hz. It is not clear whether the televisions have an ips or VA panel; TP Vision suggests that the 9308 has a better panel than the 9008. It is clear that the 9308 has a better sound system. The televisions do not have Google TV or Android TV; the OS is a further developed version of Saphi, a proprietary system that is based on Linux and very similar to Google TV. The two models will be available from autumn for as yet unknown prices.
The Philips 8808 and on the right the 9008
In addition, TP Vision comes with LCD TV models that are positioned slightly lower: the PUS8808 and the PUS8508. These midrange models are referred to as The One. That marketing name has also been used by TP Vision in previous years and should make it clear that these TVs have just about all the essential features. The 8808 has a 120Hz panel, while the 8508 doesn’t go beyond 60Hz. The 8508 can play 4k120 material, which comes with a halving of the vertical resolution. Both models get Google TV and have the P5 processor and Pentonic 1000 chip, which are also in the mini LED TVs mentioned above. The 8808 comes in 43, 50, 55, 65, 75, and 85-inch screen sizes, while the 8508 comes in 43, 50, 55, 65-inch sizes. These Philips TVs will be available from May.
