Toyota invests in artificial intelligence for cars

Toyota will partner with scientists from Stanford University and MIT technology institute to develop artificial intelligence. The technology developed must then be deployed in the company’s cars.

The main purpose of the investment is to prevent road casualties by making traffic safer, Toyota said. According to the automaker, studies are being rigged to ensure that cars get smarter; For example, objects must be better recognized, including fellow road users such as cyclists, pedestrians and other motorists. Elderly people who have difficulty driving a car should also be able to take advantage of the artificial intelligence to be developed. Intelligent systems could, for example, recognize driver errors and then correct them.

There will be research centers on the campuses of Stanford University and MIT, the two American scientific institutions with which Toyota works. The company is investing an amount of 50 million dollars, converted about 45 million euros, for the development of artificial intelligence. The money is invested over a period of five years. It is not clear when the first concrete results are expected.

It is not immediately clear from the information released by Toyota whether technology to make cars self-driving is also being worked on. That is something that many car manufacturers have been focusing on in recent years. It is therefore plausible that the technology that Toyota wants to develop should also ensure that cars can eventually drive independently.
