TotalEnergies and Engie have won a tender allowing them to install and operate 10,000 public charging stations in Flanders. The charging stations will be installed in the coming year and a half in the provinces of Flemish Brabant, West Flanders, Antwerp, Limburg and East Flanders.

The French multinationals were already awarded the tender in July by the Flemish Minister of Mobility, Lydia Peeters (Open VLD). However, because an unknown party lodged a protest with the Council of State, the process was temporarily halted. On Tuesday, the Council of State rejected the protest, writes De Tijd.

The public charging stations can be ordered by owners of electric cars who do not have the possibility to charge at home. In addition, the poles will be placed in places designated by the government, such as public parking spaces that have too few charging stations. Total Energies will install public charging stations in Flemish Brabant and West Flanders. Electrabel, a subsidiary of Engie, installs piles in the provinces of Antwerp, Limburg and East Flanders.

Minister Peeters wants at least 30,000 public charging stations to be available in Flanders by 2025. With this, approximately 300,000 electric cars can be charged.
